There is a new JavaScript runtime called Bun that has been quietly gaining momentum for two years and is now firmly at the top of GitHub Trending with over 400 new stars today. If you are not a developer, the term JavaScript runtime probably means nothing to you. But the shift that Bun represents is worth understanding because it affects the performance and cost of a significant portion of the software the internet runs on.

JavaScript was originally designed to run in web browsers, adding interactivity to web pages. Node.js, released in 2009, changed that by allowing JavaScript to run on servers, outside the browser, powering the backend of web applications. Bun is built on a different underlying engine than Node.js and is dramatically faster at almost everything: starting up, running scripts, installing packages, and executing server side code. Independent benchmarks consistently show Bun running two to four times faster than Node.js on equivalent tasks.

Speed matters in two ways for software. First, faster servers handle more requests with the same hardware, which directly reduces infrastructure costs for companies running at scale. Second, faster development tools mean developers spend less time waiting for builds, tests, and scripts to complete, which compounds into significant productivity gains over time.

The reason Bun is trending today is that it recently released updates making it even more compatible with existing Node.js code, lowering the barrier for developers to switch. The GitHub star count reflects developers who have tried it, liked it, and want to bookmark it for current or future projects. When a tool that promises to make your existing code faster without requiring you to rewrite it reaches this level of community attention, adoption typically follows quickly.
