Apple's container tool reached its 1.0.0 release on June 9 2026, its first stable version after roughly a year of public development. The open source command line tool runs Linux containers inside lightweight virtual machines on Apple silicon Macs, giving each container its own dedicated VM and hardware level isolation rather than the shared kernel model used by traditional runtimes. Apple first introduced the tool at WWDC in 2025, and the initial public commit landed on May 30 of that year. How is Apple's container different from Docker?
The core difference is the isolation model. Most container runtimes share a single host kernel across many containers. Apple's tool instead spins up a separate lightweight Linux virtual machine for every container you run. That gives each one hardware level isolation, which shrinks the attack surface compared to the shared kernel approach. It leans on the companion Containerization Swift package for the low level work and uses the macOS Virtualization framework directly, so there is no extra hypervisor to install. The requirements are strict, and that is the catch. You need a Mac with Apple silicon, since the tool is built specifically for that hardware and will not run on Intel Macs at all. It also targets a recent macOS release, taking advantage of newer virtualization and networking features in the system. Installation is a signed package you download from the GitHub release page, and the project ships under the Apache License 2.0, so it is genuinely open for inspection and contribution.
