Apple Container reached its 1.0.0 release on June 9, 2026, the first stable version of Apple's open source command line tool for running Linux containers on a Mac. The tool is written in Swift, optimized for Apple silicon, and gives each container its own lightweight virtual machine instead of sharing a single host kernel. By the time it hit version 1.0 it had gathered more than 26,000 stars on GitHub, and it remains one of the most watched repositories on the trending list.
The project started as a public commit on May 30, 2025, and spent more than a year in active pre release development before this milestone. During that stretch the maintainers warned that stability was only guaranteed within patch versions and that minor releases could carry breaking changes. The 1.0.0 tag closes that uncertainty and signals Apple's first stable API and tooling contract, published under the Apache License 2.0.
How is Apple Container different from Docker?
The architecture is the core difference. Where a traditional runtime like Docker runs many containers on top of one shared Linux kernel, Apple Container spins up a separate lightweight virtual machine for every container. That gives each one hardware level isolation and a smaller attack surface, since a process escaping one container does not land in a kernel shared with everything else on the machine.
It accomplishes this without a heavy hypervisor layer, because it builds directly on the companion Containerization Swift package, which talks to the macOS Virtualization framework. The tool consumes and produces OCI compatible images, so it pulls from and pushes to any standard registry, and those images run anywhere else that speaks the OCI standard. In practice a Mac developer keeps using familiar registries and image formats while getting stronger isolation underneath.
What are the limits before adopting it?
The biggest limit is hardware. Apple Container requires a Mac with Apple silicon and does not support Intel Macs at all, and the maintainers generally will not chase bugs that cannot be reproduced on current macOS. If your team still runs Intel hardware or older system versions, this tool is not an option today.
There are functional gaps as well. Through much of its pre release life the tool could not fully stand in for Docker, with various features still missing or partial, and a recent release patched a low severity security issue in the image load path that could let a maliciously crafted archive write outside the extraction directory. None of that is disqualifying for a 1.0, but it is the kind of detail a team should weigh before moving real workflows over. For developers already living inside the Apple silicon ecosystem, a native, stable, OCI compatible runtime with strong per container isolation is a meaningful addition to the toolbox.
